How to add a delivery date picker to Shopify

Why delivery date pickers matter on Shopify

A delivery date picker lets your customers choose when their order arrives — instead of guessing from a vague "3–5 business days" estimate. For stores that sell perishable food, flowers, gifts, or furniture, this isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s the difference between a delivery that works and one that creates a support ticket.

Without date selection, customers place orders with no visibility into when they’ll arrive. The result: WISMO emails ("Where is my order?"), failed deliveries when nobody is home, and abandoned carts from customers who can’t confirm the date works for them. Stores that add delivery date selection typically see 5–20% fewer support tickets within 30 days.

The fastest way: install Flare from the Shopify App Store

The simplest way to add a delivery date picker to Shopify is through an app. Flare installs from the Shopify App Store and gets a working date picker on your store in under ten minutes — no developer, no code, no theme file changes.

Here’s the process:

  1. Install Flare from the Shopify App Store. Approve standard permissions (orders, themes, shipping). Takes 30 seconds.
  2. Choose your placement — slide cart, cart page, product page, or checkout (Shopify Plus). The setup wizard walks you through it.
  3. Add to your theme — click "Add to theme" and Flare opens the Theme Editor with the picker block pre-configured. Click Save.
  4. Configure basic rules — set which days you deliver, block bank holidays, set a cut-off time for same-day orders.
  5. Go live — the picker is on your store and working. Fine-tune later from the Flare dashboard.

For the full walkthrough, see our install guide.

Where to place the date picker

Flare supports four placements. Each is added through the Theme Editor (or Checkout Editor for Plus) — no code required. You can use one or multiple at the same time.

Slide cart (cart drawer)

The side panel that slides in when a customer adds to cart. Best for mobile-first stores and fast add-to-cart flows. Customers choose their date without leaving the page. Slide cart guide →

Cart page

A full page with more room for the calendar alongside the order summary. Best for stores with complex carts — multiple items, gift messages, upsells. Cart page guide →

Product page

Shows the date picker before the customer adds to cart. Best when the delivery date is part of the buying decision — flowers, gifts, made-to-order items. Product page guide →

Checkout (Shopify Plus)

A native checkout block using Shopify’s Checkout Extensibility API. 195ms average response time, validates orders before payment. Requires Shopify Plus. Checkout guide →

What you can configure after install

The setup wizard gets you live quickly. After that, Flare’s dashboard gives you full control over your delivery rules:

  • Blocked dates — bank holidays, warehouse closures, seasonal blackouts. Guide →
  • Cut-off times — same-day or next-day deadlines. After the cut-off, the date disappears automatically. Guide →
  • Shipping zones — different transit times, shipping days, and rates by postcode or ZIP. Guide →
  • Order limits — cap how many orders can book each date. Full dates close automatically. Guide →
  • Picker customisation — colours, label text, date format to match your brand. Guide →

Other methods (and why apps are better)

Custom Liquid code

You can add a date input to your cart template using Liquid and cart attributes. This gives you a basic date field but no delivery logic — no blocked dates, no cut-off times, no postcode rules, no validation. Every rule change requires a developer. It works for the simplest use case but breaks as soon as your delivery requirements grow.

Shopify Flow (enterprise)

Shopify Flow can tag orders and trigger workflows based on delivery dates, but it doesn’t provide the customer-facing date picker itself. You still need an app or custom code for the selection UI. Flow is useful for automation after the date is selected — not for the selection step.

What to look for in a delivery date picker app

Not all date picker apps are equal. The features that matter most at scale:

  • Postcode/ZIP-level delivery rules — different dates by location, not just one flat estimate
  • Cut-off times that actually remove dates from the calendar in real time
  • Checkout validation — blocks invalid orders before payment, not after
  • No-code setup — added via Theme Editor, no developer dependency
  • Shipping rate integration — date and rate from the same rule set, not two separate apps
  • Native Checkout Extensibility — loads at native speed on Shopify Plus checkout

Flare covers all of these. See the full feature list or start a free trial.
